Reflections on Nowruz: Navigating Global Conflict and Conscious Action
Maheen Amjad
It has been months since I have truly felt joy during celebrations. I find myself hesitating before participating, a result of my growing curiosity and awareness.
Today marks Nowruz, the “new day,” an ancient festival heralding the arrival of spring. Spring symbolizes new beginnings and transformations, yet the perpetual cycle of obstacles hinders the beauty of this celebration. While some may view this sentiment as dramatic, many share the underlying unrest felt worldwide.
Articulating my thoughts on the ongoing global conflicts has been a painstaking process. According to the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (2023), there have been 182 reported conflicts, a number that has only increased over time.
I hesitate to attribute this completely to global leaders; rather, I believe it reflects our collective negligence towards the sanctity of life and morality. We have lost sight of our true purpose among this relentless pursuit of power and dominance.
Genocide and forced occupation persist before our eyes in Palestine, despite ample evidence and calls for resolution. Those in positions of power perpetuate these injustices, having built their empires upon oppression. It’s a tragic cycle repeating itself throughout history.
The power game has ensnared even the nations suffering from conflict, as they too partake in the ongoing atrocities in Palestine. While I could list down you with statistics and images, the sentiments of people worldwide speak volumes.
Instead, I would want us to engage in meaningful dialogue, to comprehend the dreadful circumstances we collectively face.
This power struggle wouldn’t persist if we remained steadfast in our consciousness. True power lies not in the hands of the oppressors but in our ability to make informed decisions rooted in history, empathy, and moral integrity.
Those who claim to pursue peace while instigating conflict insult humanity itself.
This Nowruz, let us reclaim control through conscientious decision-making, ensuring our actions do not inflict harm upon others. Let us be the conduits of tolerance and justice, rectifying the mistakes of our predecessors and rewriting history for the betterment of all for our generations.
May we all have consciousness, Barakats, and Mushkil Asan. Ame(e)n.
