Body shaming: Good or Bad?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedIn

–Sukanya Singh

What do you think, are we schooled enough??? Even though we have certain level of degree certificates in our hands??? Are we worth a five-star??? Let’s take a deep look at what this piece consists of.

‘Communication’ as we all know, plays a cardinal role in our lives every day. It is like the daily supplement as our food, shelter and other day to day survival necessities. Communication is the exchange of words, varied genres of emotions and feelings with one another along different ways. But now-a-days most of us revolve around certain interaction pattern where one intentionally hurts one and other gets agonized at the same time.

Yes, ‘BODY-SHAMING’. This particular refers to making or delivering critical and extremely lacerating comments about someone’s body shape, size, height, complexion, and etcetera. The word itself seems to be very negative and there is no any particular idea about why this has emerged and at such a pace??? Well!! maybe it is because individuals in a society have forgotten the ways to talk, the ways to accost, the ways to motivate others, inspire people, provide something constructive and productive, deliver something positive, other than showing off their National and International degrees with pride.

Picture1 1

“Hey! How are you?? You have gained weight girl!!!”….. “She is sooooo skinny”….. “Oh my god look at him, he is so dark..hahahahahah”….. “Hey guys look at her, she is so short like a shrub……” such comments are a “CRIME’. No one has earned the right to throw such antagonistic comments on others, no matter rich or poor.  These are god-gifted.  If we take a close look, especially on the youth’s issues, this has been marked at the apex. Most of them share that- they do not like to share a social bonding, they do not wish to attend social meetings, get-togethers, they do not even like to come out of their rooms when someone visits their place.

What they pour out  “…people have nothing to say different, other than reflecting their negative vibes and comments on one’s body……what their priority is someone’s body first and then the rest falls accordingly such as about studies, family, friends…..etc, this is really very disturbing.”

Body-shaming is not an end at that particular point of time when one does to another and disappears. This is often neglected but, yes, people do suffer a lot from this. They are unnerved to such a mark, where they start questioning their existence…They start hating their body … scolding themselves in front of the mirror, slapping themselves, locking themselves in the room, experiencing degrading graphs in studies or work, due to lack of concentration and motivation and finally they fall prey to depression and anxiety issues. They start to break bonds with family, friends, society, and whatnot. It is not necessary to kill someone with a weapon but sometimes what a ‘sword’ cannot, ’word’ does. And it really works very smoothly. A ‘Word’ is such ‘power’.

People should not judge someone by their body shape, size, height, complexion, etc. They should see what these gifts of God can do, even without a toned, fit, healthy body or with a fair or dark complexion, short or long. If people are so worried and caring about others, they should provide them with proper information about the matter concerning and should try to extend a helping hand. They should try to motivate those and put them into action and not just make afflicting comments and go.

People are becoming technically precocious. They should try to spread motivating videos, quotes or messages and target those victims so as to revive their dying souls inside. Instead of insertion of unnecessary posts, people should aim for a common objective together so as to bring down the level of the concerning topic. Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens. But if they are weak how anyone can contribute to build themselves along with the nation??? It is a huge loss.

A request that people should enroll and fathom the value of other members of the society as well, irrespective of their body shape, size, colour. They should be fully allowed to be a part of society and its varied activities. They should not be looked down on. They should be made free from such negative web of comments that pulls them to the deep base every single day. Let’s join hands and march ahead for a better society, smiling faces and a developed Nation.
