Harnessing the Power of Technology: India and Singapore at the Forefront of Legal Innovation
In his keynote address at the Indo-Singapore Judicial Conference, Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, underscored the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in redefining legal research and the functioning of the judiciary.
However, he also emphasized the critical importance of incorporating ethical considerations in its integration.
Chandrachud kicked off his address by applauding the conference’s groundbreaking focus on technology’s capacity to trigger pivotal dialogues at the intersection of technology and the judiciary. He acknowledged the profound influence of judicial dialogues in fostering cross-cultural exchange and mutual learning across varied legal systems.
He praised the bonds between India and Singapore, highlighting both nations’ dedication to preserving the rule of law and promoting access to justice. “As two dynamic and rapidly evolving nations, both India and Singapore recognize the transformative potential of technology in modernizing their respective judicial systems,” said the Chief Justice.
Chandrachud applauded Singapore’s rise as a global hub for technology and innovation, noting its adoption of avant-garde initiatives such as online dispute resolution platforms and electronic filing systems. He also applauded India’s strides in leveraging technology to modernize its judiciary, particularly through initiatives like the e-Courts project.
The Chief Justice then shifted his focus to AI’s transformative potential in legal research, describing it as a “game-changer” that bestows legal professionals with unparalleled efficiency and precision. He mentioned specific instances where AI, particularly ChatGPT, was utilized in court adjudication, citing examples from India and Colombia.
However, he warned against ignoring the ethical, legal, and practical considerations linked to AI integration into court proceedings. “These instances show that we cannot avoid the question of using AI in court adjudication. The integration of AI in modern processes including court proceedings raises complex ethical, legal, and practical considerations that demand a thorough examination,” he affirmed.
In his closing remarks, Chandrachud noted that the progression of technology and AI is inevitable. “The era of maintaining the status quo is behind us; it is time to embrace evolution within our profession and explore how we can harness the processing power of technology to its fullest within our institutions,” he said.
The Supreme Court organized a two-day conference to delve into the intersection of technology and the legal system, focusing primarily on AI’s transformative role in the judiciary. Judges and jurists, along with Chief Justice of Singapore, Justice Sundaresh Menon, participated in panel discussions covering a broad range of topics.
