Families all over the world prepare activities to honour the unique fathers in their lives on Father’s Day each year.
Our well-honed Father’s Day gift guide helps dads everywhere get new socks, strange flavours of barbecue sauce, or something they genuinely desire.
During their first real Father’s Day, new fathers may find themselves turning to their own fathers for advice and dad jokes, while mothers and older children pore over Father’s Day quotes and messages for the ideal words to write in their hilarious card.
While your dad surely likes receiving gifts and love on this special day, the ordinary dad back when the holiday was first established, more than 100 years ago, had a rather different perspective. In actuality, there was no clear transition from conception to celebration of Father’s Day. So when is Father’s Day, what is it precisely, and where did the tradition come from? On this father’s day-themed day, we have the answers to all of your questions.
Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 18, this year.
The development of Father’s Day
Mother’s Day has a long history dating back to the 1860s, and in 1914 it was made a federal holiday. Then, Mother’s Day marked the beginning of Father’s Day. Father’s Day’s origins can be traced back to 1908, when a church in West Virginia presented a sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in a coal mine explosion the year before. Even though it was the nation’s first occasion to exclusively honour dads, at least within that community, it was a one-time activity.
The following year, however, Sonora Smart Dodd began her campaign to make Father’s Day a federal holiday. Dodd, one of six kids raised by a single father, believed that fathers deserved the same respect as mothers.
The first Father’s Day was officially observed in Dodd’s native state of Washington on June 19, 1910, after she had petitioned the government and her neighborhood for a year. Father’s Day celebrations have grown over time from state to state, and in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed legislation making it a federal holiday following a protracted legal battle.
We now commemorate Father’s Day with humorous statements about dads, fathers and sons, and even stepfathers for the extra dad in our lives.
Father’s Day wasn’t officially recognised as a federal holiday until more than 60 years after the concept was first proposed, and during that time, a lot of things occurred that threatened the parent-celebrating holidays. There was a widespread campaign in the 1920s and 1930s to combine Mother’s Day and Father’s Day into one holiday known as “Parent’s Day.”
In addition, some guys didn’t want Father’s Day at all. As many dads were the only breadwinners at the time, they perceived it as a “Hallmark holiday,” created only as a marketing ploy, and many didn’t especially want their hard-earned money going towards flowers and chocolates.
When is Father’s Day observed in other countries?
Father’s Day is observed on several dates around the world. For instance, the holiday is observed on the third Sunday in June in Europe, the United States, and the majority of other nations. St. Joseph’s Day, which comes on March 19, is a time when fathers are honoured in many Catholic nations, particularly in Latin America. Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September in many Pacific nations, including Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia.
