MANIPUR, THE WAY FORWARD

We have all been deeply moved by the mindless violence in Manipur where precious lives have been lost and common people of all sides have suffered untold miseries and there seems to be no immediate solution in sight as sporadic violent incidents are recurring.

The underlying issues have already been discussed in detail in many forums nationally .

Unless the vicious  atmosphere eases up to an extent, the road to meaningful dialogues for peace among the up-in-arm factions seems to be wishful thinking.

As such, the first priority is to restore the law and order situation in the state. In this aspect, the role of the Authority has been less than confidence inspiring to say the least.

It’s understandable that in an emotionally charged hostile atmosphere any suggestion for way forward may not be welcome. The trust deficit among communities at this moment looks unbridgeable.

“Therefore, it may be a small step towards trust building, if all communities agree firmly to keep the womenfolk and the children out of harms way in the future, no matter what the provocation be ! If this  one condition is religiously followed from here on, things can never go morbidly wrong.”

Yet, a beginning has to be made by the communities in strife themselves as the rest of the world is not directly affected by the loss of human lives, property and humanity itself in such mindless mayhem.

Ask the affected people who have lost their near and dear ones and they will vouch they never asked for this kind of madness. The pain of life getting shattered all of a sudden is Universal and it’s so personal only the ones to have faced it know.

The point that is being tried to make is that peaceful coexistence of the communities may not be in the interest of some Vested Interests who thrive on fomenting trouble for ulterior gains.

Therefore, it may be a small step towards trust building, if all communities agree firmly to keep the womenfolk and the children out of harms way in the future, no matter what the provocation be ! If this  one condition is religiously followed from here on, things can never go morbidly wrong.

But this rule has to be followed with utmost honesty by all parties to the agreement. As a precaution to prevent vested interests from trying to violate this rule through paid brokers, all the parties will have to be alert and able to bring such culprits to book so that the trust is not breached.

If this one step works, the communities will definitely find more ground rules to add to the list for achieving workable peace in the long run.

It’s not by any means a solution to the major issues concerning the parties which will need  Political will and dialogues among the communities and the government. But it will certainly create an atmosphere towards finding a lasting solution.
