Welcome To The World Of Generation Alpha!
KAKALI DAS
By now, you’re probably familiar with the term ‘rizz’ – it’s become ubiquitous in Gen Z internet slang, denoting style or charm. But have you heard of a ‘rizzler’? Derived from ‘rizz’, it actually refers to a good person.
If you’re finding this perplexing, fret not, because this is just the outset! Welcome to the linguistic domain of Generation Alpha, or Gen Alpha – the cohort trailing right behind Gen Z.
As the only generation fully born in the 21st century, Generation Alpha encompasses those born between 2010 and 2024. At present, the eldest children are on the cusp of turning 14, while the youngest are yet to be born this year.
These are the offspring of millennials. Essentially, they can navigate iPads adeptly, but they’re still mastering the art of tying their own shoelaces. They’ve embarked on a generational rite of passage by crafting their own slang, birthing new trends, and befuddling their elders in the process.
One distinguishing factor is that Generation Alpha is a monumental generation. Over time, the global population has been undergoing significant shifts – it’s growing wealthier, receiving better education, and becoming more immersed in digital technology.
However, Gen Alpha children are poised to surpass all their predecessors. They’re projected to become the most educated, tech-savvy, and affluent generation ever. Moreover, they’re anticipated to be the largest generation in history, surpassing 2 billion people. It’s high time we familiarize ourselves with them better.
Here’s a much-needed introduction to Gen Alpha. Let’s begin with their relationship to technology – consider this generation as an unintentional global experiment.
Their birth coincided with the rise of the app era in 2010, the same year Instagram was launched and the iPad was introduced. Hence, they’re often referred to as “iPad kids.” Screens have been a constant presence in their lives from the start, serving as pacifiers, educational tools, and sources of entertainment.
They represent the first entirely online cohort, and their upbringing has always revolved around media. They’ve grown accustomed to it and are adept at adapting to artificial intelligence at an accelerated rate. Gen Alpha has been raised alongside virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa in their households, and even encounter tools like ChatGPT in educational settings, where the AI model serves as a learning aid.
Thus, the increasingly blurred boundaries between AI and humanity don’t unsettle Gen Alpha, potentially benefiting them as they enter the workforce. Given that AI integration in the workplace is unavoidable, and considering the evolving landscape of work, Gen Alpha stands poised to navigate these changes adeptly.
In previous generations, careers in medicine or engineering were often viewed as the pinnacle, but not so much for the younger generation anymore. They’re now exploring a broader range of career paths, such as becoming influencers on social media – while Gen Z may have paved the way, Gen Alpha is quickly catching on.
Children are stepping into the role of online influencers, creating and promoting their own trends. Additionally, they’re driving the development of services tailored specifically for children, spanning from skincare products to payment apps.
Gen Alpha is also recognized for their willingness to spend money more readily, making them an ideal target audience. This is why marketers are diligently trying to understand and cater to this generation – from preteens and kids to toddlers, babies, and even those yet to be born.
However, not everything is smooth sailing for Gen Alpha. The most significant event shaping their lives has been the Wuhan virus pandemic – it has impacted their learning methods and academic performance. Studies indicate a decline in test scores since the onset of the pandemic, accompanied by a notable increase in student absenteeism. Moreover, their social interactions have suffered, negatively affecting their mental well-being.
Adding to their challenges, Generation Alpha is grappling with climate anxiety from a young age. Born during some of the hottest years on record, they are witnessing the ravages of climate change intensify worldwide. Consequently, the youngest generations are confronting the impacts of climate change more acutely than their predecessors ever had to.
Similar to every generation preceding them, Gen Alpha possesses its own set of advantages alongside their unique challenges. They can only hope that cryptic memes offer a reliable coping mechanism, while Gen Z gradually begins to empathize with millennials, who, like boomers before them, spent decades feeling frustrated with computers.
