ARE WOMEN REALLY EMPOWERED IN INDIA?

July 9, 2025

After completing her undergraduate studies, Mira further honed her skills in the field of technology. Her educational journey took her through the intricacies of mechanical engineering, laying the foundation for a career that would later blend innovation, leadership, and a commitment to ethical AI development.

Mira’s journey through the tech landscape included significant stints at prominent companies such as Tesla and Leap Motion. At Tesla, she played a key role in the development of the Model X car, gaining valuable insights into the intersection of artificial intelligence and automotive technology. Her time at Leap Motion, a startup focused on hand and finger motion tracking, further expanded her expertise in cutting-edge technologies.

It was during her tenure at Tesla that Mira’s fascination with artificial intelligence took root. Exposed to the transformative potential of AI, she set her sights on a career in the field, seeking opportunities to contribute to the development of intelligent systems that could reshape the technological landscape.

In 2018, Mira Murati’s journey brought her to OpenAI, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits humanity as a whole. Her role as the Vice President of Applied A.I. and Partnerships marked the beginning of a chapter where she would contribute significantly to the organization’s mission.

OpenAI, founded with the vision of advancing AI technologies in a responsible and transparent manner, found in Mira a leader who shared its commitment to ethical AI development. The organization’s dedication to shaping a future where AI benefits all of humanity aligned seamlessly with Mira’s own aspirations.

Mira Murati’s ascent within OpenAI was swift and impactful. Recognizing her exceptional skills and visionary leadership, she assumed the role of Chief Technology Officer in the previous year. In this position, Mira became a driving force behind the development and delivery of revolutionary AI products, including the widely acclaimed ChatGPT and DALL-E.

As the overseer of operations, Mira ensured that OpenAI’s engineering teams met ambitious timelines while upholding the organization’s commitment to ethical AI practices. Her ability to navigate the complexities of large language models and oversee the deployment of advanced AI technologies solidified her reputation as a trailblazer in the field.

Revolutionizing AI: One of the hallmarks of Mira Murati’s tenure as Chief Technology Officer has been the successful development and deployment of ChatGPT and DALL-E. These projects have not only showcased the technical capabilities of OpenAI but have also demonstrated the potential applications of AI in diverse domains.

ChatGPT, in particular, gained widespread attention for its achievements, such as excelling in U.S. medical-licensing and MBA exams. Mira expressed her surprise at the level of excitement generated by ChatGPT’s capabilities, emphasizing the need to explore avenues where the technology can provide utility beyond mere novelty.

In-Depth Interview with TIME: In a recent interview with TIME, Mira Murati shared insights into the achievements, challenges, and ethical considerations surrounding AI. The interview provided a glimpse into her perspectives on the role of ChatGPT, its achievements, and the challenges associated with large language models. Mira emphasized the need for responsible AI development, acknowledging the potential for misuse and stressing the importance of global governance in aligning AI use with human values.

In the pursuit of gender equality and empowerment, it is crucial to highlight the challenges faced by women in regions like Afghanistan and Iran, where systemic barriers often limit educational and professional opportunities. Mira Murati’s commitment to diversity and inclusion extends beyond her role at OpenAI, encompassing a broader vision for empowering women in technology globally.

In Afghanistan, women have historically faced numerous challenges, including limited access to education and employment opportunities. Societal norms and geopolitical unrest have often curtailed the aspirations of Afghan women, restricting their ability to pursue education and careers outside traditional roles.

To break these barriers, there is a growing need for initiatives that focus on providing education and skills training for Afghan women. Education serves as a powerful catalyst, empowering women with the knowledge and tools to overcome societal limitations. Organizations and initiatives that aim to bridge the educational gender gap can play a pivotal role in unlocking the untapped potential of Afghan women.

As the tech industry continues to evolve globally, there is a unique opportunity to foster inclusivity and diversity. Encouraging Afghan women to pursue education and careers in technology can not only empower them individually but also contribute to the diversification of the global tech landscape. By providing resources, mentorship, and opportunities, the barriers that Afghan women face can be dismantled, allowing them to become leaders and innovators in the ever-expanding field of artificial intelligence.

Navigating Challenges, Cultivating Resilience: In Iran, women encounter a complex landscape where societal norms and legal constraints often limit their freedom and opportunities. Despite these challenges, many Iranian women have demonstrated resilience, excelling in various fields and contributing to their communities.

Education becomes a beacon of hope for Iranian women seeking to break free from societal restrictions. By investing in educational initiatives that specifically target women, there is an opportunity to equip them with the skills necessary to pursue careers in technology. Initiatives that focus on STEM education and vocational training can empower Iranian women to explore opportunities in cutting-edge fields, including artificial intelligence.

A member of the Iranian community cuts her hair outside the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran during a rally to defend women’s rights in Iran on Sept. 28, 2022, in Seoul, South Korea.

Technology, particularly the field of artificial intelligence, has the potential to transcend borders and empower women globally. By providing Iranian women with access to educational resources in AI and related technologies, we can create pathways to economic independence and professional success. Organizations committed to promoting diversity in technology can collaborate with local partners to ensure that Iranian women are not only included but also given the tools to thrive in the rapidly advancing tech landscape.

As we address the challenges faced by Afghan and Iranian women, it is essential to envision a future where women, regardless of their background, lead and contribute to the highest echelons of the technology industry. The story of Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and empowerment.

Mira Murati’s journey from a mechanical engineer with a passion for AI to the Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI showcases the potential for women to excel in technology leadership roles. Her story is a source of inspiration, demonstrating that with determination, resilience, and access to education, women can break through barriers and become leaders in cutting-edge fields.

OpenAI, under the leadership of Mira Murati, has the opportunity to contribute to the vision of a more inclusive and diverse tech industry. By actively supporting initiatives that promote education and opportunities for women in regions facing challenges like Afghanistan and Iran, OpenAI can play a crucial role in cultivating the next generation of women leaders in artificial intelligence.

The challenges faced by women in Afghanistan and Iran underscore the urgent need for global initiatives that focus on education and empowerment. By breaking down barriers and providing opportunities for women in technology, we not only address gender inequality but also tap into a wealth of untapped potential that can drive innovation and progress.

OpenAI’s commitment to ethical AI and responsible development positions it as a key player in fostering inclusivity within the tech industry. Through strategic partnerships, educational initiatives, and a dedication to diversity, OpenAI can contribute to creating a future where women, regardless of their background, are not only included but are at the forefront of shaping the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Mira Murati’s leadership at OpenAI underscores this commitment and sets the stage for a future where technology is shaped by diverse voices and perspectives.
