RUSSIAN WAR CRIMES AND HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATIONS IN THE WAR AGAINST UKRAINE, June 29, 2022
The use of weapons of mass destruction against civilians is a crime against humanity and a violation of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949.
By killing civilians, the aggressor’s forces continue to commit crimes against humanity as defined by the Statute of the International Military Tribunal and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, cynically disregarding all the requirements of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. According to these norms, deliberate attacks on civilians who are not directly involved in hostilities are equated to war crimes.
The taking of civilian hostages is a direct violation of Articles 3 and 34 of the Geneva Convention with regard to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
As of June 29, 2022, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 341 children have died and more than 627 children have been injured. Due to the active hostilities in affected regions, there is no possibility to inspect the areas of shelling and destruction. The actual data on dead and injured children in these regions are currently being established.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, since the beginning of the war, Russia has inflicted devastating losses on Ukrainian territory:
– 89 thousand 342 houses were destroyed in Donetsk region, 26 thousand 192 in Kyiv region, 6 thousand 157 in Kharkiv region, 5 449 in Mykolayiv region, 3 thousand 612 houses in Zaporizhzhia region.
– 21 thousand 779 objects and buildings of critical infrastructure were completely destroyed, almost 140 thousand – partially,
– the official death toll among the civilian population – 4,731 thousand,
– Almost 10,000 fires broke out across the country as a result of the shelling.
Donetsk and Luhansk Regions
The Islamic Cultural Center “Bismillah”, in the Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk, on the ground floor of which was the mosque of the same name, was completely destroyed.
Sheikh Timur Beridze, the imam of the Muslims of Severodonetsk and Luhansk region, announced this.
According to him, as a result of the shelling, the mosque was completely destroyed and a fire broke out. The fire killed at least 17 civilians, who hid in it, as well as used a well with drinking water for their own needs and hoped that the religious building would not be the target of shelling.
This is the fourth of those mosques in Ukraine that have been destroyed to varying degrees as a result of Russian attacks.
During the day on June 28, the occupiers killed one civilian and wounded eight others in the Donetsk region. This was announced by the head of the regional military administration Pavlo Kyrylenko.
Due to the fighting in the Luhansk region, the Severodonetsk thermal power plant was almost completely destroyed. This was reported by NNEGC Energoatom on Wednesday, June 29.
Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said residents of the occupied city were forced to hunt pigeons to find food. Handy traps are used for this purpose. According to the director of the Center for Primary Health Care, the consumption of pigeon meat for food is associated with a number of diseases. According to the doctor, the use of pigeons is especially dangerous for children and the elderly and even threatens death.
Kharkiv and Region
Russian troops launched a missile strike on Kharkiv at about 23:00 on June 28. According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a rocket fell near a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. It is partially destroyed, neighboring homes are damaged.
Two women, aged 24 and 37, were injured.
As a result of the shelling of Tsyrkuny in the Kharkiv district, two people died – men aged 29 and 36, one wounded – said the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleh Synegubov.
According to him, two people were also injured in the Dergachi community, five were hospitalized after the shelling of the Kharkiv Industrial District in the afternoon of June 28, and another woman was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds after an enemy attack on the Shevchenkivskyi district of the city at about 11 p.m. In addition, shelling in Kharkiv damaged private houses, outbuildings, warehouses and other civilian infrastructure in Kharkiv.
During the day, the occupiers fired on the Izium, Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv districts in the region. As a result, a boiler house, a hospital, a children’s playground and residential buildings were damaged in Pechenihy.
Mykolaiv and Region
As a result of missile strike at Mykolaiv about 7 o’clock on June 29, one of the Russian missiles hit directly in a high-rise apartment building.
As the State Emergency Service in the Mykolaiv area reports, as of 11 o’clock during dismantling of blockages rescuers found bodies of four dead inhabitants. Surviving people are being unblocked from under the rubble of building slabs. Three people are currently injured.
It is reported that as a result of a Russian missile hitting a 5-storey building, 8 more neighboring residential high-rise buildings were damaged by the blast wave. The State Emergency Service reports 4 dead and 6 injured in total.
Later, Vitaliy Kim added that as a result of enemy shelling in the region, the fields with the harvest caught fire. There was also a fire in the grain warehouse.
Kherson and Region
In the village of Bila Krynytsia, Kherson region, on June 25, the enemy caused significant damage to the elevator.
The deputy of the Kherson regional council Ihor Yosypenko reported about it.
The house of culture with the national museum, the village council, the stele of memory to the liberators of the Second World War are also damaged in the settlement.
According to the information available, the elevator had capacities of simultaneous storage of 52 thousand tons of grain.
Dnipro and Region
In the Dnipro region, 24 educational institutions have been damaged since the beginning of the full-scale invasion as a result of shelling by Russian troops. This was announced during a briefing on June 29 by the Deputy Head of the Dnipro Regional Military Administration.
As a result of a missile strike on the service station in the Dnipro yesterday, two people died. Valentyn Reznichenko, the head of the Dnipro Regional State Administration, announced this. According to him, specialists found the wreckage of the missile “Caliber” at the site of the destruction.
The governor later updated information on the victims. Seven people were injured in the attack, including a 6-year-old boy. He was hit by the glass from the shattered window. Two people were hospitalized, five are being treated at home.
Poltava and Region
As a result of a missile strike by the Russians on June 27 on a shopping mall in Kremenchuk, the building burned down completely. This was announced during a briefing on June 29 by the head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration Dmytro Lunin.
So far, 75% of the total area of the building has been inspected and dismantled.
As a result of the missile strike, 18 people died (of which 1 person died in the hospital), 8 body fragments were found, 61 people were injured, and 26 were hospitalized. Four are now in critical condition. 21 people are missing. The head of the regional military administration noted that a child was among the vic- tims.
Sumy and Region
Throughout the day, on June 28, the Russian occupiers fired on settlements bordering the Russian Federation in the Sumy region. There were casualties.
The head of the Sumy regional military administration Dmytro Zhyvytsky reported about it.
According to him, as a result of intense shelling of the regional border, two people were killed and three others were injured.
Odesa and Region
After the Russian troops fired on a recreation center in the Odesa region on May 16, a five-year-old girl had her leg amputated and her mother lost her hearing. This was reported by the Odesa police.
Zaporizhzhia and Region
In Zaporizhzhia region, six officials and 368 civilians are being held captive by the Russian occupiers. This was announced by the head of the Zaporizhzhia re- gional military administration Oleksandr Starukh.
He said that the occupiers continue to repress the residents of Energodar, in par- ticular against citizens who have their own position and leaders who do not want to cooperate.
More than 100 settlements of Zaporizhzhia region remain without gas supply due to hostilities. Today there are 81,011 subscribers in 109 settlements of the region without gas supply in the region.
48 settlements of Berdiansk and Melitopol districts remain disconnected from gas supply due to damage to the main gas pipeline in the Donetsk region.
