WTO launches new online course on trade and sustainable waste management
World Trade Organization
The WTO and the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Conventions) launched on 7 November a new online course on the interplay between international trade rules and the movement of chemical products and toxic waste across borders.
This interactive course looks at how the rules under the BRS Conventions — multilateral environmental agreements aimed at protecting human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and waste — interact with the rulebook of global trade.
Entitled “The BRS Conventions and the WTO: Enhancing international cooperation for sustainable development”, this course is intended to help government officials understand the pivotal role played by disciplines under the BRS Conventions and the WTO in governing the cross-border movement of hazardous waste and chemicals — and in contributing to the achievement of key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 12 on Responsible consumption and production.
The course also explains how the rules under the BRS Conventions and the WTO permit safeguarding human health and preserving the environment from threats posed by trade in hazardous chemicals and waste.
“Jointly developed by the BRS conventions Secretariat and the WTO’s Trade and Environment Division and Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, this new “Level 2” course is a unique opportunity for both trade and environment specialists to familiarize themselves with issues at the juncture of trade and sustainable waste management,” said Ludivine Tamiotti, Head of the WTO’s Environment Section.
This “Level 2” specialised training activity is an intermediate level of learning within the WTO’s Progressive Learning Strategy. The start of this course marks the first anniversary of the WTO’s online course platform, which offers training on the multilateral trade agreements and many other topics related to international trade.
Roberto Fiorentino, Head of the e-Learning Unit, stressed: “The WTO’s e-Learning Programme is the gateway to learning on the WTO and the multilateral trade agreements. Accessible and free for all from anywhere at any time, it allows learners to shape and pace their learning journey in the fascinating world of international trade.”
The course, along with all other online courses, is available here.
